The Indian bus perceived a 2.68 rise in sales for April-May 2013 as against April-May 2012. A total of 17,310 buses were sold in Indian Market so far this fiscal year as against 16,858 units during the same period last year.


The Medium and Heavy bus segment saw the sales lessened by 1.41 % with 8090 units during April-May 2013 as against 8206 units in April-May 2012. The LCV segment had grown by 6.65 year-to-date in this financial year against the previous financial year.

LCV segment contributes 53% of the year-to-date sales in financial year 2013 slightly widening the gap with the M&HCV segment which contributes 47% of sales volume.

M&HCV Segment

The top two players in the M&HCV segment, Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors witnessed decline in sales in April-May 2013, while Eicher is performing remarkable well with 85.78% growth as against April to May period of 2012. Ashok Leyland’s sales decreased by 6% while Tata Motors witnessed a steep fall by 15.40%. The luxury bus makers Volvo also suffered a decline of sales by 11.81%. Apparently Mahindra Navistar posted a 12.68% increase in sales for April-May 2013 as against April-May 2013.

Both the top two players in the segment, Tata and Ashok Leyland lost considerable market share to Eicher. Eicher after gaining some share stays with 15% market share, while Ashok Leyland leads the chart with 38% followed by Tata Motors with 33% market share.

LCV Segment

SML Isuzu gets a huge boost in this segment as their sales grew by 149.60%. A total of 619 units were sold in April-May period of 2013 as against 248 units in April-May 2012. Force Motors, Eicher and Mahindra Navistar had posted growths meanwhile the market leader Tata Motors is the only OEM which registered decline in this segment.

Tata Motor's market share in this segment got reduced and stay at 40%. Second placed Force Motors remains flat.Isuzu improved their share from 3% during April-May 2012 to 7% in April-May 2013.
