JSW MG Motor EV Sales in India: Strong in the Cities, Thin Everywhere Else
This is a sample of our analysis. We have the same exclusive data for every brand, every model, and every variant in India.
JSW MG Motor leads EV sales in 64 RTOs in Indian cities. In another 292, it is the runner-up. That is 356 cities where it is first or second. For a brand that sells cars in a market full of strong rivals, that is a real position.
But a lead in many cities is not the same as a strong business. To see the difference, look at three things: what MG sells, where it sells, and what is missing.
What does MG actually sell? Mostly electric
MG’s business now rests on electric cars. The large majority of its volume comes from battery-electric variants. Petrol is a distant second. Diesel is a small tail.
Inside the electric range, one model does the heavy lifting. The Windsor EV, especially its top Essence trims, sits at the head of the table. The Comet EV holds a steady middle. The ZS EV, once the brand’s electric face, is now a small contributor.
The variant view tells a second story. Petrol and diesel sales are spread across many close variants of the Astor and Hector. They differ by trim, gearbox, and special edition. No single one stands out. So the brand wins on electric, but its petrol and diesel range has not built scale.
Where does MG sell? In the big cities
Now look at the map. EV demand in India sits in the large cities and metros. Together they hold most of the volume.
Mid cities and small towns are small blocks. The rural and other blocks are bigger than either, but it should not be read as village demand. It includes registrations at rural RTOs next to big cities, such as Ahmedabad Rural (Bavla). Many of these buyers live in or near the city. So EV demand around large cities is even stronger than the city block alone suggests. The next wave of growth has to come from mid cities and small towns, plus the fringe areas around big cities.
What could change the picture?
First, the petrol-diesel gap. MG’s volume in these fuels is spread thin. Reports say Volkswagen and Škoda are in talks with JSW Group about a partnership in India, and JSW also owns MG’s India business. Nothing is confirmed, and it’s unclear which cars or engines would be involved. If a deal does happen, petrol and diesel are where it could matter most.
Second, the move beyond big cities. MG JSW Motor is leading in 64 RTOs and runner-up in 292 RTOs from Jan to September 2026. Winning in the next 100 is harder. It needs the right variant, at the right price, with the right charging support.
Why variant-level data matters
A brand-level number can hide what is happening. “MG is growing” does not say which model, which trim, or which city. You see the real story only when you map each variant to each city and each powertrain.
That is what we do. Our database covers every brand, every model, and every variant in India, in a standard Excel format with deep analytics on top. We can tell you where a variant leads, where it is second, and which cities are still open.
