Indian Two Wheeler Sales Overview – Half Yearly sales for FY 2013-14 grow by 4%

The two wheeler sales for first half of FY 2013-14 stood at 7,016,971 units, posted 4% growth as compared against 7,016,971 units sold during HY1 FY 2012-13. The scooter sales grew by 17% in HY1 FY 2013-14 with 1,657,921 units sold against 1,422,047 units sold during HY1 FY 2012-13. Sales of Motorcycles records 1% growth for HY1 FY 2013-14 with 5,014,123 units sold against 4,970,616 units sold during HY1 FY 2012-13.


Brand-wise Overview

Among the manufacturers, Hero posted 1% growth in sales for HY1 FY 2013-14 with 2,911,107 units sold against 2,894,249 units sold in HY1 FY 2012-13. Honda continues their upward stride achieving 23% increase in sales with 1,590,586 units sold against 1,290,386 units sold in HY1 FY 2012-13. Bajaj sales declined at 12% for HY1 FY 2013-14 with 1,078,127 units against 1,220,365 units for HY1 FY 2012-13.

Market leaders Honda lost 2 points of market share in HY1 FY 2013-14 against HY1 FY 2012-13 now hold 41% in overall two wheeler market. Honda saw their share increased to 23% in HY1 FY 2013-14 from 19% in HY1 FY 2012-13. Bajaj auto saw their share reduce to 15% in HY1 FY 2013-14 from 18% in HY1 FY 2012-13.

Motorcycles

Hero posted 3% decline for HY1 FY 2013-14 sales of motorcycles at 2,577,218 units against 2,657,063 units sold in HY1 FY 2012-13. Bajaj Auto saw their sales decline 12% with 1,078,127 units against 1,220,365 units sold in HY1 FY 2012-13. Sales of Honda registered an impressive growth of 32% for first half of FY 2013-14 with 750,624 units against 567,288 units sold for HY1 FY 2012-14.

Royal Enfield sold 85,807 units during HY1 FY 2013-14, registering 54% increase in comparison with 55,645 units sold in HY1 FY 2012-13

The sales of Mahindra motorcycles stood at 42,326 units.

Segment leader Hero saw their share decreased to 51%. Bajaj auto also lost market share and has come down to 22% for HY1 FY 2013-14 from 25% in HY1 FY1 2012-13. Meanwhile Honda saw their share increase to 15%.

Scooters

Honda registers 16% in scooter sales for HY1 FY 2013-14 with 839,962 units against 723,098 units sold in HY1 FY 2012-13. Hero’s sales for HY1 FY 2013-14 stood at 333,889 units, increase by 41% against HY1 FY 2012-13 where 42,386 units were sold. Mahindra is suffering in this segment as their sales crumbled by 53%.

Honda’s market share remain locked up at 51% in HY1 FY 2013-14 while Hero improved their share to 20% in HY1 FY2013-14 from 17% in HY1 FY 2012-13.

    Can you share the engine displacement size range and distribution for the various segments? and the distribution of these sizes (ie what engine sizes are most popular)?
