In December 2014, domestic sales were 39,860 units as compared to 35,234 units over the same period last year. Domestic sales, thus, grew by 13% whereas exports grew by 14%.
The Indian passenger three-wheeler market has always been dominant in India. In December 2014 the industry produced 31,196 units in three Wheeler passenger segment and 8,664 units in three Wheeler goods segment indicating 15% sales growth in Domestic and 6% rise in exports. Overall, 1% segment share increase was noted in three Wheeler passenger vehicles against 1% segment share decrease in three Wheeler Goods carrier.
Bajaj, an undisputed market leader in three-wheeler segment, accounted for sales of 16,191 units in December 2014 as compared to 11,456 units in December 2013. Italian auto major Piaggio, who is a market leader in three-wheeler goods segment due to its better operation economy, bigger size, and excellent mileage, mostly runs in rural areas in 3W passenger segment.
The sales figures for Mahindra & Mahindra, Atul Auto, TVS and Scooter India were 4,112 units, 3,545 units, 1,473 units and 1,066 units respectively in December 2014.
During this period, Bajaj and TVS increased their market share from 32% to 40% and from 2.4% to 3.7% respectively. While Piaggio lost around 2%, Mahindra & Mahindra lost around 5%, Atul Auto lost trivial market share of 1% however its sales increased.
Focusing on exports, the global leader Bajaj Auto accounted for 71% exports although it fell by around 6% in December 2014 over the same period last year. TVS also increased its export market share from 15% to 22%, on the contrary, Piaggio lost its export market share.
Bajaj Auto exported 26,820 units, while TVS, Piaggio and Mahindra & Mahindra exported 8,413 units, 1,809 units and 364 units respectively.
