Three Wheeler Segment down at 2.38% in Q1 FY 2013-14

The Indian three wheeler market underwent a reduction in sales of 2.38% in the first quarter of financial year 2013-14. A total of 108,603 units were sold during the period as against 111,251 units sold during the same period of previous financial year.


The passenger segment registered 2.44% de-growth while the goods segment registered 2.15% de-growth in the Q1 FY 2013-14 as against Q1 FY 2012-13.

Bajaj Auto witnessed their cumulative sales increased by 2.89% whereas Atul Auto registered a strong 10.96% growth for Q1 FY 2013-14 as against Q1 FY 2012-13. Among the negatives, sales of TVS declined at a massive 35.84%.

Bajaj Auto had improved their market share to 41.46% in three wheeler segment, while second placed Piaggio hold 35.71%.

Passenger Segment

In passenger segment Bajaj is the most selling brand with 45,004 units sold during Q1 FY2013-14 as against 43,738 units sold in Q1 FY 2012-13. Atul Auto had sold 4095 units during the quarter recording a 22.38% growth. Mahindra registered 18.62% decline whereas Piaggio sales are down by 3.62%.

Bajaj hold 51.55% market share in this segment followed by Piaggio with 30.73%.

Goods Segment

The three wheeler goods segment sold 21,299 units in Q1 FY 2013-14 as against 21,766 units during Q1 FY 2012-13 registering a reduction of 2.15%. The players like Piaggio and Mahindra were able to mark a positive growth in this segment with 2.83% and 9.28% respectively. While the biggest downfall came in the form of Bajaj’s 95.18% decline in sales.

Both Piaggio and Mahindra had better their market share in this segment. Piaggio poses 56.04% in this segment while Mahindra’s share is 20.68%. Bajaj Auto used to hold 5.05% share during Q1 2012-13 and this has now diminished to a mere 0.25% in Q1 2013-14.

Bajaj Auto are currently revamping their entire product range and will introduce the digital twin spark ignition technology in three wheelers for the first time.The introduction of diesel variants will provide direct competition to TVS range and with their bigger range of commercial vehicles to be introduced they will directly challenge Piaggio.

    But you are not talking about small regional manufacturer’s
    All together they are also visible contributor to the market
    e.g. Premier, Kumar Scooters etc.
    I Would like to know about future trend in this Industry ?
