The total sales of Trucks for the third quarter of this fiscal year (Q3 2012-13) decreased by 3.16% at 174,191 units compared to the same quarter of previous fiscal where 174,191 units were sold. The snail paced economic growth together with arrested development in construction sector as well as ban on mining sectors in many parts of the country had rattled the Trucking Industry from the beginning of this fiscal year. The M&HCV segment is the worst affected with another steep decline of 49.02% in sales this quarter with a mere 49,780 units sold compared to 74,274 units sold during Q3 2011-12. The LCV segment mostly aided by sales of vehicles greater than 3.5ton GVW earned a growth of 17.79% at 124,411 units compared to 105,615 units during the third quarter of last fiscal.

Among the major OEM’s Tata Motors sold a total of 103,827vehicles for the third quarter of this fiscal, which is a 4% less when compared toQ3 FY 2011-12 where their sales were 108,188 units. As the worst affected OEM in the domestic market, TATA Motor’s M&HCV took a downhill with 28,159 units against 46,540 during the third quarter of last fiscalmarking a 39.5% decrease. In the LCV segment sales they recorded 22.74% increase during the third quarter at 75,668 units sold as against 61,648 during same period last year.

Ashok Leyland on the other hand improved their overall sales for Q3 2012-13, where they managed to sell 17,261 vehicles against 15,523 during Q2 2012-13 which is 11.2% increase, which is mainly contributed by the good performance of Dost in the local markets. They sold an impressive 7,975 LCVs during the quarter as against 2,490 during the Q3 of last fiscal. However the growth of M&HCV has decreasedby 28.75% at 9286 trucks sold as against 13,033for Q2 2011-12.<!–more–>

For the Q3 2012-13, the majority of market share still remains with TATA Motors at 59.6% where it has slightly decrease from 60.1% for Q2 2011-12. Mahindra and Mahindra improved their share to 20.9% for third quarter as compared to 18.7% for the same period last fiscal. Ashok Leyland also shows signs of improvement where their raise their percentage share to 9.9% for Q3 2012-13 as against 8.6% against last year’s third quarter. Piaggio had been the worst hit by a heavy decline where they lost considerable ground from last fiscal which was 1.4% to a mere 0.2% market share for the third quarter of 2012-13.

M&HCV (GVW >14t)

The sales of Commercial Goods Vehicles falls down to 35,894 units for Q3 FY 2012-13 from 57078 units for Q2 FY 2011-12, which is 37.11% less than what it were the year before.

ICV (GVW 7.51t to 14t)

This segment also marks a negative growth 19.25% for Q3 this fiscal, at 13,886 vehicles sold in comparison with last fiscal’s third quarter where the sales were 17,196 units.

LCV (GVW 3.51t to 7.5t)

This segment with 9,821 vehicles sold for Q3 FY 2012-13 which is 23.8% less than what it were a year ago.

SCV (up to GVW 3.5t)

We are seeing a constant improvement and rising sales figures in this segment. An increase in sales by 23.58% keeps the numbers up to 114,590 units sold for Q3 this fiscal compared to a 92,725 units during the same period last year.

Segment Share

On segment share analysis,we had seen M&HCV had lost 11% share and came down to 21% during Q3 from 32% the year before. ICV and LCV segments also underwent slight decrease in its segment share. Thereby SCV improved its share from 53% during Q3 last year by 13% to 66% for Q3 this year.

  1. great data… but how did you classify trucks according to gvw because as per the motor vehicle act hcv are those whose gvw is >12tonne and lcv are those whose gvw is 0-7.5t ..and they dont specify the range for gvw for mcvs..so i am eager to know that how did you make this range..is it applicable for india because non of the report of planning commission and MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAY using the range of gvw given by you..they only use hcv and lcv ..so i am confused about this range of gvw …can you plase give me the solution of it??

      SCV (upto 3.5 ton)
      LCV (3.51 – 7.5 ton)
      MCV (7.51 – 16 ton)
      HCV (16 – 49 ton)
