The two wheeler sales for August 2013 stood at 1,128,598 units, posted 7% increase in comparison with 1,057,925 units sold during August 2012.


The scooter sales put on a strong performance in August 2013 with 283,142 units sold against 233,180 units sold during August 2012, thus registering 21% growth. Sales of Motorcycles posted 4% growth at 795,378 units sold against 766,127 units sold in August 2012. Moped sales of TVS declined by 15% at 50,078 unit sold in August 2013 against 58,618 units in August 2012.

Among the manufacturers, Hero posted 4% growth in sales for August 2013 with 450,146 units sold against 431,739 units sold in August 2012. Honda continues their upward stride achieving 39% increase in sales with 291,639 units sold against 209,164 units sold in August 2012. Bajaj sales declined at 23% for August 2013 with 150,989 units against 195,093 units for August 2012.

Market leaders Hero lost 1 point market share in August 2013 against August 2012 now hold 40% in overall two wheeler market. Honda saw their share increased to 26% in August 2013 from 20% in August 2012. A troubled Bajaj auto saw their share reduce to 13% in August 2013 from 18% in August 2012.

Motorcycle Sales Overview

Hero posted 2% growth in this segment at 395,180 units against 388,903 units in August 2012. BajajAuto sales are down by 23% with 150,989 units sold against 198,053 units sold in August 2012. Hero is up to close the gap against Bajaj as they posted a healthy growth of 49% in motorcycle sales in August 2013 at 144,039 units against 96,879 units in August 2012. Newly launched Mahindra motorcycle Centuro along with Pantero sold 11,502 units.

Hero leads the pack with 50% market share in motorcycle segment, but the real race on the cards is between Bajaj and Honda. Bajaj has now 19% share which came down from 25% during August 2012, while Honda stay with 18% market share improved from 13% during August 2012.

Scooter Sales Overview

Honda sold 147,600 units in scooter segment for August 2013, consolidating their dominance posting 31% sales growth against 112,288 units sold in August 2012. Hero’s sales stood at 54,966 units of scooters registering 28% growth against August 2012 where 42,386 units were sold. Tide is against Mahindra in this segment as their sales crumbled by 60% and were only able to sell 3812 units in August 2013 against 10,028 units in August 2012.

Honda gained share in this segment and took it to 52% in August 2013 from 48% in August 2012. Hero also gained a point and now holds 19% share in scooter segment.
