The Indian Truck Market witnessed a decline in sales of 25% in August 2013 at 44,182 units sold against August 2012 sales of 59,074 units. The M&HCV segment fall apart at 44% with 11,855 sold during August 2013 against 21,103 units sold in August 2012. The LCV segment sales stood at 32,327 units in August 2013 lower by 15% compared to August 2012 sales of 37,971 units.


The contribution of LCV segment had increased to 73% in August 2013, which was 64% of total sales in August of 2012. M&HCV contribution has now came down to 27%.

M&HCV Segment

The manufacturers are heavily suffered in this segment triggered by lack of any support from market dynamics. Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland the two biggest truck manufacturers suffered 47% and 42% decline in sales of August 2013 against same month of previous year.

The market leaders Tata Motors got their market share reduced to 59% in August 2013 sales from 62% during August 2012. Despite registering 37% decrease in sales, Eicher saw their market share increased to 14% for August 2013 which was 12% during August 2012. Ashok Leyland also gained 1 point share in M&HCV segment and now post 22% market share.

LCV Segment

The light commercial vehicle segment saw Tata Motor’s sales reduced by 22% in August 2013 at 17,225 units sold against 22,044 units sold in August 2012. Mahindra’s sales are down by 3% in August 2013 at 11,402 units against 11,769 units in August 2012. Sales of Ashok Leyland Dost had dropped by 22%. On the back of newly launched Porter, Piaggio saw their sales increased to 178% with 612 units for August 2013 against 377 units in August 2012.

The leaders Tata Motors lost 5 points market share in August 2013 and now poses 53% which was 58% in August 2012. Mahindra got their share raised to 35% in August 2013 from 31% in August 2012.
