The Indian automobile industry had recorded total sales of 10,303,397 units in the first half of financial year 2013-14 against 10,134,939 units during the same period of previous financial year recording a growth of 1.7%.


Domestic sales posts 1.2% increase with 8,783,950 units sold in HY1 FY 2013-14 against 8,681,544 units sold for the first half of FY 2012-13. Exports grew by 4.6% in the first half of FY 2013-14 with 1,519,447 units against 1,453,395 units during same period of FY 2012-13. Automobile production during HY1 FY 2013-14 stood at 10,282,388 units against 10,214,868 units during the same period of previous financial year, recording an increase of 0.7%.

Domestic Sales Overview

Two Wheeler segment registered growth of 3.5% for HY1 FY 2013-14 at 7,016,971 units against 6,779,245 units sold during the same period of FY 2012-13. Passenger Vehicle sales fall by 5.2% percent in HY1 FY 2013-14 by selling 1,200,792 units against 1,266,053 units sold during the same period of FY 2012-13. The domestic sales of commercial vehicles stood at 326,648 units for first half of FY 2013-14 against 385,738 units in the same period of previous financial year, registering a decline of 15.3%. Three Wheelers sales got reduced by -4.4% in HY1 FY 2013-14 with 239,539 units against 250,508 units for first half of FY 2012-13.

The domestic sales contribution of two wheelers had decreased to 78% during the first half of FY 2013-14 from 80% during the same period of FY2012-13. Domestic sales of Passenger vehicle segment gained one point and now holds 15% market share.

Exports

The three wheeler exports had marked a significant growth of 29.9% in HY1 FY 2013-14 against HY1 FY 2012-13, whereas passenger vehicles exports grow by 13.8%. Considerable reduction by 19.1% in exports of commercial vehicles is affected by weak demands along with rising competitions from foreign OEMs.

The two wheeler segment share had now declined to 66% for HY1 FY 2013-14 from 69% during HY1 FY 2012-13. Passenger vehicles had gained one point and post 20% share during HY1 FY 2013-14. Three wheeler’s contribution increased to 12% in the first half of FY 2013-14 from 9% in HY1 FY 2012-13.

Production

The total industry production marked an increase of 0.7%. The three wheeler production grow by 9.6% in the first half of financial year 2013-14 with 10,282,388 units against 10,214,868 units during the same period of previous financial year recording a growth of 1.7%. The commercial vehicle production for HY1 FY 2013-14 got reduced by 11.6% at 363,714 units against 411,366 units sold for the first half of FY 2012-13.
